Overview

## Who this is for You have an admission offer from a SEVP-certified school in the United States and you need an F-1 nonimmigrant visa. India is consistently the largest source country for F-1 visas, with approximately 270,000 to 330,000 issued annually in recent years, so wait times in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata can be tight during summer. ## Process at a glance 1. Receive Form I-20 from your university after accepting admission and submitting financial documentation. 2. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee (USD 350) at FMJfee.com. 3. Complete the DS-160 online and upload a compliant photo. 4. Pay the MRV fee (USD 185) and schedule your biometrics and visa interview through ustraveldocs.com/in. 5. Attend biometrics at an OFC, then attend the visa interview at the Consulate (Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) or Embassy (Delhi). 6. If approved, your passport is returned via courier within 3 to 5 business days. ## Interview wait times and the dropbox If you have a previous US visa in the same category that expired within the last 48 months, you may qualify for the Interview Waiver (Dropbox). For first-time F-1 applicants, an in-person interview is mandatory. During peak season (April through July), wait times for interview slots in Mumbai and Hyderabad have run from 15 to 90 days; check ustraveldocs.com/in before paying SEVIS to confirm a slot is available before your I-20 program start date. ## What officers look for Indian F-1 applicants face high approval rates overall but rejection clusters around specific weak signals: program-school-funding mismatches (e.g., a USD 60,000/year program funded by USD 15,000 in family savings), unclear career narratives, and low-ranked schools paired with vague answers about why this institution. Be ready in 60 seconds to say: - The exact program (specialisation, not just "MS"). - Why this university specifically (faculty, lab, alumni outcomes you can name). - How you will fund all four to six semesters, with sponsor names and amounts. - What role you will return to or build for in India. ## Funding documentation The Consulate looks for liquid funds plus credible income stream. A typical Indian application combines: parents' savings (FDs, mutual funds, savings accounts), education loan from an Indian bank or NBFC (HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, ICICI, SBI), and any scholarship or assistantship. Education loans are widely accepted as long as the sanction letter is in hand and disbursement schedule is clear.

Quick reference

Processing Time
End-to-end timeline is 6 to 14 weeks from I-20 receipt during off-peak months and 12 to 20 weeks during April-to-July peak. Pay SEVIS and complete DS-160 in week 1, secure an interview slot, and target a interview date 4 to 8 weeks before your program start. After approval, passport return via Blue Dart or VFS courier takes 3 to 5 working days.
Application fee
SEVIS I-901: USD 350. MRV visa application fee: USD 185. Both paid in INR equivalent at the prevailing rate. Courier return is included. Approximate; verify current amounts on ustraveldocs.com/in and FMJfee.com.
Financial Proof
You must demonstrate liquid and accessible funds covering tuition plus living expenses for at least the first academic year, matching your I-20 figures. The Consulate accepts a combination of family savings (six months of bank statements, FDs, mutual funds), salaried income (three years of IT returns plus current salary slips), education loans with formal sanction letters, and scholarships or assistantships in writing. Last-minute lump-sum deposits without a clear source are scrutinised. If a parent's stated income on IT returns cannot plausibly support the savings shown, expect probing questions or a 214(b) refusal. Educational loans from HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, ICICI, SBI, and similar institutions are well-recognised; bring the sanction letter to the interview.
