Founded in 1842 by Holy Cross priests, Notre Dame is the nation's most prominent Catholic research university, sitting on a 1,250-acre campus just north of South Bend, Indiana, anchored by the Golden Dome of the Main Building and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Single-sex residence halls function like residential colleges and become a four-year identity for students, while the football program -- Knute Rockne, Touchdown Jesus, the Fighting Irish -- gives Saturdays a cultural weight few US schools match. In 2024, Notre Dame became need-blind for international applicants, joining a small group of US universities with that policy.
